Shots Fired During Attempted Carjacking

At about 4:36am Sunday, Turlock Police responded to an occupied suspicious vehicle in the 1000 block of E. Springer Drive.

When Officer Khounlivong arrived on scene and met with the victim, it was discovered the incident was actually an attempted carjacking that had just occurred.

The victim, who was driving a white 2022 Dodge Charger, had stated that he had just pulled into his driveway when he noticed a black 2017 Chevrolet Camaro following him.

The Camaro immediately began attempting to block the victim in, when the victim began reversing in an attempt to get away from the Camaro.

A collision between the two vehicles occurred in the driveway, causing the Camaro’s front license plate to fall off and get left behind.

Once the victim made it back out onto the street, he briefly saw two occupants in the Camaro wearing black ski masks as he accelerated eastbound on E. Springer Drive towards Heartland Way in an attempt to get away.

The victim stated that while he was fleeing, he heard two pops from behind him. After Khounlivong reviewed surveillance footage, he determined these were gunshots. It was discovered that a second Camaro had been parked nearby when one of its occupants had exited it, pointed a firearm at the Charger, and shot at it twice.

It was later discovered that the original Camaro that had left its license plate behind was an unreported stolen vehicle taken from Walmart in the 3000 block of Loughborough Drive in Merced.

Surveillance footage of the incident was later shared on the internet, which ended up going viral.

“You hear about it all the time, but you never think it’s going to happen to you,” said the victim. “Carjackers followed me into my driveway and tried ambushing me for my Hellcat. I was aware enough to realize the situation and decided to avoid it. At that point I knew the car was going to get damaged if I tried getting out of there. I called PD as soon as I got away.”

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information that could assist in it is encouraged to call Officer Andy Khounlivong at 209-668-1200.
