Sideshow wreaks havoc in southwest Turlock Thursday night

On Thursday, May 5th, 2022, at 10:00 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported sideshow coming into town off of W Main St, Turlock. Officers made their way there where they found over one hundred vehicles headed eastbound. The officers followed the vehicles to Wakefield Elementary School, 400 South Ave.

Once at Wakefield Elementary School, the group started doing burnouts and launching off illegal aerial fireworks in the parking lot and the street. This went on for about an hour before the group eventually left town northbound on N Golden State Blvd.

Somewhere around ten traffic stops were made during this time period for a variety of equipment and moving violations, a majority of which resulted in citations being issued.

As the group was leaving town, an officer in an unmarked vehicle noticed a U-Haul pickup truck driving at excessive speeds through residential streets and completely disregarding and blowing through stop signs.

The officer made a traffic stop on the U-Haul and immediately arrested its driver, Jesse Cruz, 20, of Turlock. A brief investigation led to the discovery of evidence that burnouts were being performed with the U-Haul in its wheel well. Cruz was eventually released on a citation on charges of reckless driving. The U-Haul was also impounded.

About an hour later, at 12:23 am, officers were dispatched to another sideshow group gathering in the parking lot of Costco, 2955 N Tegner Rd. Luckily, as officers began arriving, that group quickly began dispersing. A few more traffic stops were made which resulted in a couple more citations being issued.

After that, no more sideshow activity was reported in town throughout the night.
