As the Memorial Day Weekend festivities approach, the Turlock Fire Department’s Facebook page has shared some outdoor grilling safety tips to keep you and your guests safe!

National Fire Protection Association Public Education Division provides safety information that supplies everything Turlockers need to know about propane and charcoal grilling procedures.

According to NFPA, approximately half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. July in particular is a peak month for grill fire.

For those interested in propane grilling, keep in mind that if bubbles are being released from your propane hose, there could a leak present. Check for leaks by applying soap and water.

If there is a leak present by bubble test or smell be sure to turn off your grill and have the grill serviced by a service professional, if the leak consists stop using immediately and call the Fire Department.

Additional precautions include checking your gas tank hose for leaks at least once a year.

Charcoal grilling can be set up by charcoal chimney starters. These chimneys allow you to start with using newspaper as fuel. They can also be started by using charcoal fluid, but never add additional fluid to the fire.

When finished grilling, allow your charcoal to completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

Both propane and charcoal grills should always be used outdoors and remain a safe distance from homes and decks. Children and pets should also be kept at least 3 feet away.

Additional tips for grill safety are keeping your grill clean and never leaving it unattended.
