David Fransen|

The California Highway Patrol and Turlock Police are investigating a break-in and theft that occurred sometime before 5 a.m. on Tuesday at the Turlock Employment Development Department on North Broadway, which is slated for closure this month.

According to the CHP, who are handling the investigation because the crime occurred on state property, thieves stole computers and equipment, a camera, and a state-owned Chevy Impala.

In addition, the thief or thieves’ left behind human waste streaked throughout the office and ransacked the office and break room.

Turlock police responded to the incident and discovered the break-in occurred at a window in an alley at the rear of the office. TPD took fingerprints and other forensic evidence, which is now at the Department of Justice.

The Turlock EDD Office is scheduled to close Oct. 15.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Modesto CHP office at (209) 545-7440.
In other crime news an unknown person or persons broke three front windows sometime this morning at Bigfoot Carpet on West Olive Avenue, near the EDD building. Turlock Police spokesperson Mayra Lewis says police took the report as a damaged property incident because nothing was taken from the store.

Bigfoot Carpet Manager Jeff Lee believes the windows were broken by a BB gun drive-by sometime overnight. Lee says a single BB damaged another window, but it was not destroyed. Over $2,000 in damage was reported. Bigfoot remains open.
