As the weather gets warmer and the days become sunnier, many people begin to look towards swimming as a means to stay in shape.

Although the City of Turlock's public pools will not open until early summer, the Turlock Aquatic Club will begin their summer session of swimming programs as early as April 8.

“Last year over 200 people were involved with Turlock Aquatic Club’s programs,” said Amanda Ables, Turlock Aquatic Club Interim Head Coach. “We have a program for everyone.”

From learn-to-swim lessons, to competitive swimming, to swimming for fitness, the Turlock Aquatic Club offers various programs to meet just about everyone's different swimming needs.

By “building character one stroke at a time,” the Turlock Aquatic Club continually strives to teach their athletes to be positive, goal-oriented, and focused.

“With Turlock Aquatic Club, swimmers are not only given the opportunity to become excellent swimmers and athletes, but also great students, individuals who contribute to the community, and all around strong, healthy individuals who exhibit character in everything they do,” said Ables.

Numerous studies have shown the extensive health benefits of swimming. Aside from improved fitness, exercising in the water can be therapeutic, social, stress-relieving, and fun.

According to the United States Water Fitness Association, the physical benefits of swimming include improved flexibility and strength, built-up endurance, increased muscular flexibility, stronger heart muscles, improved physique, increased circulation, and much more.

“The health benefits the sport of swimming provides to people of all ages are endless,” said Ables. “Swimming is truly a sport that someone can participate in for their entire life. Not only is swimming an unbeatable work out, but it provides a second family and sense of community that is unique to aquatics.”
