Turlock Blockbuster Survives Cut, Stores Closing Nationwide

David Fransen

Though hundreds of Blockbuster stores are closing across the nation, the Turlock video store has survived yet another round of cuts.

Locally, two Blockbuster stores in Modesto and one in Manteca are slated to close. But a Turlock Blockbuster manager, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the Turlock store would be unaffected.

Dish Network, parent company of Blockbuster stores, said earlier this year that it plans to close about 300 Blockbuster stores across the country. Although the company could not be reached for comment, company spokesman John Hall told The Denver Post that the closures would leave about 500 Blockbuster locations in the U.S. The closures will result in the layoffs of approximately 3,000 employees.

Although Blockbuster used to be one of the biggest names in video rental services, with the ever-increasing availability of online streaming companies such as Netflix and Hulu, in-store video rentals are losing their popularity.

Over the years, Blockbuster has lost significant revenue due to competition from other video rental companies that took on Internet streaming and DVD-by-mail strategies. In 2011, Dish Network purchased the company to start movie streaming and a DVD-by-mail service called Blockbuster @Home, which is only available for Dish subscribers.

Dish spokesman John Hall also told the Post said that each store would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis for its profitability and future potential.

Blockbuster’s corporate headquarters did not respond to numerous requests to be interviewed by TurlockCityNews.com.
