Turlock Centennial Time Capsule to be Buried, Items Sought

A Turlock Centennial Time Capsule ceremony will take place on December 5, 2008 at 5pm. Data, artifacts, memorabilia, and such are being sought to put in the time capsule.

Turlock conducted a week long Turlock Golden Jubilee celebration in 1958 to celebrate Turlock’s 50th anniversary since its incorporation. During this celebration a time capsule was buried. There were articles in the newspaper a week before asking for data including roll calls of churches, fraternal organizations, and businesses.  This Turlock Golden Jubilee Time Capsule had instructions to be opened in 50 years during Turlock’s Centennial Celebration.

The Turlock Centennial Committee dug up and opened the Turlock Golden Jubilee Time Capsule in May 2008 in Central Park. The time capsule almost went unremembered as nobody really knew or remembered that there was a time capsule and didn’t know the details to it.

When the time capsule was opened Mayor John Lazar pulled out old roll calls of churches, fraternal organizations, non-profits, businesses, city departments, and more. There were letters to the future, some pictures, and memorabilia from the Turlock Golden Jubilee Celebration.

Many people believed there should have been film, more pictures and written accounts of Turlock’s history.

The Turlock Centennial Time Capsule will definitely have more content than the Golden Jubilee Time Capsule had and is being prepared more in advance compared to the last time capsule.

The Turlock Centennial Committee is looking for donations to put in the time capsule. All items submitted to be put in the time capsule will be subject to revision as space is limited. The Turlock Centennial Committee is asking for the same as the Golden Jubilee asked for (churches, service clubs, organizations, businesses, city, etc roll calls), Turlock Centennial memorabilia, a lot of pictures, videos, written historical accounts, old print documentation (newspapers, magazines, flyers), Turlock antiques, and anything else you may think we should pass onto future generations.

The Turlock Centennial Time Capsule will be buried in Central Park to replace to Turlock Golden Jubilee Time Capsule. The time capsule ceremony will take place on December 5, 2008 at 5pm in Central Park. As the previous time capsule, it will be buried at a later date after we include documentation of all that happens on this last Turlock Centennial Celebration date and the time capsule is prepared for preservation.

Plaque sponsorships are available but limited. Donations would be greatly appreciated.

December 5, 2008 will also include the unveiling of the John Mitchell statue at 4pm, just before the time capsule ceremony at 5pm, and the Turlock Downtown Lights on Parade beginning at 6:30pm.
