Turlock Crime Rate Drops 9%

The Turlock Police Department was very pleased to learn that their recent effort to increase public safety is paying off. The 2008 calendar year crime statistics shows that overall crime has been reduced by 9%. The largest reductions have been in the area of Burglary with a reduction of 21% and Assaults with a 13% drop. They are also encouraged to see the auto theft rate has dropped by 11% in the City of Turlock, as the central valley of California is known for its high rate of auto theft. Police Chief Gary Hampton attributes these reductions to the ambitious strategic plan that the city leaders have implemented to enhance the level of public safety in our community there by improving the quality of life.

In 2006, the Turlock City Council adopted a 3 year strategic plan which was developed by the police department to enhance the level of public safety in our community. The department is currently into their second year of this plan. Not only has the department added much needed staff with this plan, they have developed several units to target specific crimes. This year has brought a narcotics enforcement unit and a street crime unit into the mix for the department’s crime fighting options.

Chief Hampton commented, “We are all well aware of the direct impact unlawful narcotic use, distribution and manufacturing has on the amount of thefts in our community. The addition of these new units have given us better tools to address these crimes. With the addition of the street crimes unit our officers will now have the time to focus on specific criminal activities which will include addressing criminal gang activity.”

This is an exciting time for the Turlock Police Department who looks forward to continuing with the elevation of the level of service they provide to the public.

The Turlock Police Department is an active participant in the Crime Stoppers Program. Callers can leave an anonymous tip by calling Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636 and may be eligible for a cash reward.
