Turlock Family Displaced After Fire

A family of seven, two adults and five children, were displaced after a fire started due to a potential faulty power strip that caused damage to their home located in the 2000 block of Cody Court on Wednesday afternoon in Turlock.

Turlock firefighters responded to a 9-1-1 on Wednesday at around 12:30pm of a residential structure fire in the 2000 block of Cody Ct. Seven occupants were inside the home at the time the fire started.

The initial cause has been reported to be that a fire started under a small cabinet in a bedroom of the house, according to the Turlock Fire Department. An investigation was conducted and the cause was determined to be electrical in nature, involving a power strip.

The Turlock Fire Department responded with eleven personnel, holding the fire to the first alarm. The fire was under control in approximately six minutes after arrival.

While the fire was contained to the house and under control quickly, the house suffered damage including the small wooden cabinet, surrounding floor, wires, and TV. Smoke damage also was present throughout the residence. The estimated loss in structural and content damage totaled approximately $4,000, according to the Turlock Fire Department.

The family of seven was displaced due to the fire damage. Red Cross responded to assist the occupants and obtained temporary housing and food for the family.

The fact that smoke detectors did not operate in the house was discovered by fire personnel on scene. It was fortunate that the fire did not begin while the occupants were asleep.

The Turlock Fire Department urges people to make sure that they check and service their smoke detectors.
