Turlock Group Seeks Help Making Blankets for Children’s Hospital

Emily’s Closet, operated by Turlocker Sandy Petros-Meyers and a group of friends, is inviting residents to join them in making no-sew blankets for the Children’s Hospital of Central California in Madera.

The group will be making the blankets at 6 p.m. Oct. 21, at the Monte Vista Chapel Activities Center at 1619 E. Monte Vista Ave.

“No-sew” blankets are simply two pieces of fleece material one-and-a-half yards each, tied together with knots around the edges.

This is the fourth year Emily’s Closet will be donating blankets. Last year the group gave more than 40 blankets to children in palliative care and the oncology unit at Children’s Hospital of Central California.

Emily’s Closet was created by Emily’s daughter, Denise Hippert, who works at Children’s Hospital of Central California. Petros-Meyers and Hippert met through a support group after Emily and Petros-Meyers' daughter Cassandra Grace passed away in the same year.

Hippert shared with Petros-Meyers that there was need for blankets in the hospital and Petros-Meyers decided to enlist the services of some friends and make blankets. In memory of her daughter Cassandra they donate them every year and Hippert shares that the patients really enjoy them, and feel comforted by them.

Rainbow Fabrics offers a discount on fabric for this project to those who mention Emily’s Closet at the time of purchase.

Petros-Meyers asks that attendees bring scissors, fabric and safety pins. “Fun, fellowship, snacks and refreshments will be provided- as well as a night off from Monday Night Football,” said Petros-Meyers.
