Turlock High NJROTC Student Earns $180,000 Scholarship

Turlock High School senior and NJROTC student Bryson Curtin was awarded a $180,000 full-ride ROTC Navy Scholarship with a Marine Corps Option to Norwich University, a private military academy in Vermont.

It is believed Curtin is the first THS student to ever receive such an honor.

At Norwich University, Bryson plans on majoring in international relations. Upon graduation he will enter the U.S. Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant for a six-year contract. Ultimately he plans to make the Marines his career.

His father, Calvin Curtin, says his family is bursting with pride. Calvin Curtin gives credit to his son for working hard to earn such a prestigious scholarship.

“Although the whole family encouraged him, Bryson did this all on his own, we simply tried to be supportive of him,” he said. “It's such a difficult goal to accomplish, there's no way we, as his parents, can push him towards it. Dedication like that comes from within. To say we’re proud, is an understatement. Our heads are still in the clouds.”

THS NJROTC Commander Major Kelly Cross says Bryson was an outstanding cadet. She praised his mental and physical toughness, and credits his family for being supportive.

“They did a great job with this stand-out young man. The country can be proud of him and his future,” said Cross.
