A Turlock man and his son died after being pulled from the water at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach this week, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

Jose Garcia Sr., 47, of Turlock, died on Wednesday at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. His son, Jose Garcia Jr., 24, or Merced, was pronounced dead the following day at St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco.

The Chronicle reports the two were swimming in the water on Wednesday afternoon when they were overcome by waves.

Rescue crews arriving on scene found one of the men, who had already been pulled from the water, unconscious. The other man was unresponsive and still in the water.

According to the Chronicle, a storm system that hit the Bay Area this week made conditions at the beach even more dangerous than they usually are.
