Turlock Police Upgrade to Electronic Handheld Citation Writers

Turlock Police and Stanislaus County Superior Court Partner to Improve Services.

The City of Turlock recently implemented the use of handheld electronic traffic citation writers. The citation writers print out a typed traffic citation and then download the data into the Turlock Police Department Records Management System and Stanislaus County Superior Court Traffic Management System. The electronic traffic citations provide benefits to the public, Turlock Police Department and Stanislaus County Superior Courts. The printed citations are more legible than manually written traffic citations. Electronically downloading the data saves valuable time entering data and reduces the error rate associated with manual data entry. 

The Turlock Police Department has been working with Superior Court employees on implementing the technology for several years and is the first law enforcement agency in Stanislaus County to deploy the devices in the field and to download data directly to the courts. Through a grant from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG), a federally funded technology grant, all Turlock Police Officers working patrol duties will soon be outfitted with the rugged handheld computers and portable printers necessary to produce electronic traffic citations. Captain Mike Langston of the Turlock Police Department said, “Anytime, we can replace a manual process with an electronic process, the efficiencies produce cost savings that are passed on to the public.” Mike Tozzi, CEO of the Stanislaus County Courts said, “Integration with our justice partners allows all agencies involved to focus on the community instead of the process.”
