Turlock Recycling Center Receives $1 Million Grant

Peninsula Plastics Recycling, Inc of Turlock received a $1 million competitive grant from the State of California’s CalRecycle’s Recycled Fiber, Plastic and Grant Program.

The grant will enable Peninsula Plastics Recycling, which is a 180,000 square-foot facility located on 23 acres at 530 S. Tegner Rd., to recover 45 percent of its current recycling process by-product and recycle it into landscaping material.

According to CalRecycle, the project and grant is expected to create about nine new jobs in Turlock.

Peninsula Plastics Recycling is the only full-service PET plastic recycler and processor in the entire state.

Statewide, $19.5 million has been earmarked for construction of new facilities, expansion of existing facilities, and equipment upgrades to process greater amounts of recycled materials. The grants, using proceeds from the state’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, were awarded based primarily on contributions to the state’s greenhouse gas reduction targets. The projects are also important in California’s effort to reach its statewide goal of 75 percent recycling, composting, and source reduction by 2020.

“These projects will directly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by keeping material out of landfills through composting, recycling, and waste prevention,” CalRecycle Director Caroll Mortensen said. “By providing financial incentives for capital investment, we can expand the infrastructure needed to divert more material to secondary uses, which will help create jobs and strengthen our ability to manage materials to their highest and best uses.”

Peninsula Plastics Recycling utilizes proprietary technology developed by its sister company, Merlin Plastics Alberta, to sort, whole bottle wash, and grind recycle PET materials. They produce FDA flake (Conditions of Use E-G) directly from our wash lines.

Peninsula Plastics Recycling also has the capability to melt-filter, pelletize, and crystallize recycled post-consumer PET flake for direct sale and reuse back into consumer packaging applications. Peninsula has a current annual production capacity of over 50 million pounds.
