TUSD Board Meeting a Chance for Public Comment

The Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees meetings will provide two opportunities for public comment on Tuesday, once before “closed session” and again during the open portion of the meeting.

The Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the District Professional Development Center, 1100 Cahill Ave.

Prior to the public portion of the meeting, the board will go into closed session at 6:05 p.m. Public comment can be made prior to closed session at 6:02 p.m.

During closed session, the board will discuss a matter concerning Government Code Section 54957, which pertains to public employee discipline, dismissal and release. Also, the board will discuss a matter concerning Government Code Section 54956.9(b), regarding potential litigation (one case).

To kick off the public portion of the meeting, Osborn Two-Way Immersion Academy student Damian Gonzalez, the Character Counts Award Recipient for this month’s character trait of respect, will give an inspirational message.

The board will later hear a presentation from students in the Pitman High School and Turlock High School Agriculture Programs regarding the Central Region FFA Hometown Hero program.

Scheduled for 7 p.m., public comment will be opened with a limit of three minutes per speaker and a maximum of 30 minutes designated for public comment.

On the consent calendar, the board will accept a donation of $12,000 to Turlock High School to be used in the John Bigler Scholarship fund, an annual donation for several scholarships. Another donation for $2,500 from the Turlock Lions Club will go to Turlock High School to be used in the THS Football Program – Harvest Bowl Sponsorship. And a donation from Trustee Eileen Hamilton in the amount of $1,000 will go to the Dutcher Middle School Drama Club to be used towards the musical production, Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Also, the board is expected to approve a personal services contract of up to $8,000 with Safe & Civil Schools to provide professional development on June 2-3, which empowers school staff with strategies that enable them to develop a school culture of safety, civility, and academic productivity.

TUSD Fiscal Services will provide a budget augmentation with input from the budget advisory committee. Business Services will provide an update on the Technology Department Program and tech progress. Educational Services will give an update on the Common Core State Standards Implementation Plan.

Lastly, administration will provide the board with information on the changes in laws regarding student behavior aboard buses, and TUSD policy for safety onboard buses.
