At about 8:47am Tuesday, Turlock Police responded to a larceny from a mailbox that had just occurred at Park Knolls Apartments in the 1100 block of Pedras Rd.

The caller reported that the suspect vehicle was a silver Mercedes-Benz driven by a young man.

Officer Marquez arrived in the area and located a matching vehicle near W. Monte Vista Avenue and N. Walnut Road. He attempted to make a traffic stop on it, but it took off from him and a pursuit ensued.

The pursuit only lasted a couple of minutes, going southbound on Walnut Road and then westbound on W. Tuolumne Road. It ended when the vehicle became disabled after crashing into a fence after it continued westbound off-road from the dead end of Tuolumne Road and attempted to get onto the freeway.

The vehicle’s two occupants, later identified as driver Michael Mascarenas, 25, of Stockton, and passenger Angel Galvan, 20, of Stockton, both leg-bailed from the vehicle, but were quickly apprehended.

Both were identified and discovered to be on probation for identity theft.

Additionally, Mascarenas had four felony warrants totaling $285,500 out of Stanislaus County, Lodi, and Lathrop for fleeing from a peace officer by vehicle with disregard for public safety, two counts of falsely identifying to a peace officer, robbery, possession of methamphetamines, two counts of possession of burglary tools, six counts of identity theft, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon or person addicted to a narcotic, and five counts of grand theft.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers located an estimated 400 presumed stolen mailpieces. Detectives assisted with having to process and book each one into evidence individually.

Mascarenas and Galvan were both arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center, Mascarenas on charges of fleeing from a peace officer by vehicle with disregard for public safety, identity theft, mail theft, obstructing or resisting a public officer in the discharge of their duty, possession of burglary tools, and buying or receiving stolen property, and Galvan on charges of obstructing or resisting a public officer in the discharge of their duty and accessory after the fact.

Additionally, their vehicle was impounded.
