The California Highway Patrol have released the cause of the accident on Highway 99 that hospitalized a CHP officer Sunday evening.

The CHP officer was traveling northbound on Highway 99 with rear lights activated, attempting to slow down traffic, said CHP spokesperson Officer Eric Parsons.

While slowing down traffic, a black Cadillac Escalade failed to stop and collided into the patrol car just past the northbound Lander Avenue onramp shortly before 6 p.m.

According to CHP, the officer suffered minor, non-life threatening injuries in the accident, but was transported to Doctors Medical Center.

The driver of the Escalade suffered minor injuries, but was not transported to the hospital.

Only a preliminary report has been completed on the accident, and it is unknown why the officer was slowing down traffic.

Typically, officers will slow down traffic due to an upcoming collision, debris, or construction.
