Vehicle falls off of Canal overpass after driving around recklessly with man on roof

On Thursday, August 13th, 2020, shortly after 7:50 am, the Turlock Police Department received a call of a rollover vehicle collision in the southbound lanes of State Route 99 between Fulkerth Rd and W Main St underneath the W Canal Dr overpass. The Turlock Police Department, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and American Medical Response all responded. Additionally, The Turlock Fire Department responded with Battalion 4, Engine 31, Squad 32, and Engine 34. At approximately 7:55 am, Squad 32 arrived on scene. Upon their arrival, they reported three vehicles blocking the #1 and #2 lanes. They also reported at least one patient sitting down outside of the vehicle. Captain 32 assumed 99 command and put Squad 32 in the investigation mode.

Shortly after 7:55 am, the Turlock Police Department received a late call reporting a tan SUV driving around on Mary Ann Dr with a male subject on top of the vehicle pounding on the roof. Officers responded to the area and were unable to locate anything. It turned out that this vehicle was the same vehicle that had went off the overpass.

When the tan SUV fell off the overpass, it fell a distance of about 20 feet, before coming to rest in the #3 lane of southbound State Route 99. As a result, it struck a tractor trailer that was traveling in the #3 lane. The force of the impact forced the tractor trailer into the #1 lane, where it was struck again by a sedan. As a result of this collision, two patients sustained serious but non life-threatening injuries and were transporting to a local hospital.

This collision caused major traffic delays for southbound State Route 99, and as a result, a seperate collision occurred in the northbound lanes of State Route 99. The Turlock Police Department was on scene and investigating this collision for several hours, while southbound State Route 99 was blocked for nearly an hour.
