Walnut Teacher Earns National Honor, Meets President

Walnut Elementary Education Center sixth grade math teacher Jamie Garner was recently honored as one of just two teachers in the state, and 102 nationwide, to earn the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.

Garner received her award in Washington D.C., and along with her fellow award recipients she had the opportunity to meet President Barack Obama.

Walnut Principal Mark Holmes praised her outstanding passion and abilities for teaching.

“Mrs. Garner is known for her exceptional instructional methods and strategies, particularly in mathematics; highly organized and goal directed,” Holmes said. “Her instructional program shows consistently strong evidence of rigor and high standards. She takes on all challenges and her output is incredible. Mrs. Garner maintains excellent relationships with students, staff and parents.She is a known leader among her peers.”

Garner earned both her BA and MA at California State University, Stanislaus, and has five years of teaching experience in Turlock schools.

In the spring of last year she was honored as the Stanislaus County Teacher of the Year for grades 4-6.

She has coached Walnut’s Future Cities competition team for two years, and most recently achieved second place at the county level and second place at the state level.
