War Memorial Cannon on the Move to Central Park

It appears as though Central Park will be the new home to the Korean War cannon that previously stood outside of the War Memorial.

The Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission (PARC) recently unanimously approved the move to Central Park. The decision will be finalized if approved by Turlock City Council at the July 14 meeting.

The cannon has long stood outside of the War Memorial, but due to the sale of the War Memorial and adjacent properties to the Turlock Irrigation District, the City of Turlock is moving the cannon.

Discussion began at the May PARC meeting, where many local veterans were in favor of moving the cannon to a more public place like Central Park, which is located on the corner of Golden State Boulevard and E. Main Street.

“We did have some discussion about that proposal and got some feedback from members of the local VFW and the other local military organizations, who did give feedback that they were generally in favor of that concept,” said Director of Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities Allison Van Guilder.

At this time, the proposed location will the be southern end of Central Park, with a hardscape and iron fence around the cannon, with the possibility of some uplighting as well.

Once the location is finalized by Turlock City Council, the plan will be to rededicate it on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

“I think it has the potential to be a really special landmark in our community,” said Van Guilder.
