Weekend Preview: Relay For Life, Love Turlock, and Free Comics

Turlock is hosting several events this weekend that cater to a wide variety of interests.

Turlock’s Relay For Life, Love Turlock, Free Comic Book Day, and the “Partners” fundraiser to support the families of fallen California Highway Patrol Officers Juan Gonzalez, 33, and Brian Law, 34 will all occur Saturday. Turlock’s Classic Car Swap Meet Show will be held Sunday.

Below is a breakdown of each event, with times and details for those who want to attend.

Turlock’s Relay For Life will be held at Pitman High School, 2525 W. Christoffersen Pkwy., on Saturday with opening ceremonies beginning at 8:30 a.m. According to the Relay’s American Cancer Society webpage, 700 participants from 55 teams are expected to fundraise during for the 24-hour event. ACS encourages guests to attend Relay, as different booths offer games, treats, and other fun for what is expected to be a sunny day. Relay For Life organizers always remind participants to bring sunscreen and break out the hats to protect themselves from the sun.

Love Turlock, a one-day volunteer based event, will kick off at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds’ free stage 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Activities for the day include painting, picking up trash, weeding, and food giveaway. Love Turlock coordinators ask that volunteers choose projects that will help them directly connect with recipients in order to facilitate relationships. Participants are expected to depart to their projects at approximately 8 a.m. and will return for the community lunch to be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Free Comic Book Day will be celebrated downtown with Sky High Comics, located at 120 W. Main St. in Downtown Turlock. Free Comic Book Day is an annual national day where people receive specially-labeled free comics for coming to comic book stores. According to the Downtown Turlock Property Owners’ Association, guests will meet some local comic artists at Sky High Comics on Saturday. The event it is expected to begin at 10 a.m.

The California Highway Patrol and Turlock’s CrossFit ParaBellum will host the “Partners” fundraiser at Turlock’s CrossFit ParaBellum gym Saturday at 10 a.m. in honor of California Highway Patrol Officers Juan Gonzalez, 33, and Brian Law, 34 who both died in action Feb. 17. The workout fundraiser competition will support the families of the fallen through $20 minimum donations from participants. Two-person teams will compete to complete as many reps as they can in 15 minutes of a 400-meter relay, 20 partner deadlifts, a 150-meter buddy carry, and 20 partner burpees. Prizes will be awarded for the top scoring teams and lunch will be available from Big Vic’s Blazing BBQ for $10 per person. After a fun-filled Saturday of fundraising, volunteering, and comic book buying, Turlockers can head over to the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds at 900 N. Broadway at 6 a.m. Sunday to check out some classic cars on display for the Classic Car Swap Meet Show. The event will host free parking and credit cards will be accepted for buyers of collectable and automotive items. The event will end at 2 p.m.
