A suspect is facing a multitude of charges, including burglary and battery of police officer, after police chased and eventually pepper sprayed and tased him following an alleged break-in Monday morning.

Turlock police responded to the 500 block of Vermont Avenue at approximately 9:23 a.m. on the report of an emergency at the caller’s home. The call was a 911 transfer from the California Highway Patrol, said Turlock police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis.

A suspect, Armando Santos, 25, allegedly kicked in the door of the residence and stole a purse. There was a restraining order against Santos preventing him from being near the residence, said Lewis.

According to Lewis, the victim was inside the home at the time of the burglary.

Once Turlock police arrived on scene, Santos allegedly fled on foot, said Lewis. Officers were able to intercept the suspect, but when they gave Santos verbal commands to comply, he allegedly refused and fled again.

One officer sprayed the suspect with pepper spray, but the spray had no effect and Santos allegedly continued to flee police, said Lewis.

Another officer was finally able to intercept Santos. The suspect allegedly took a “fighting stance,” and the officer was left with no option but to discharge his taser to get Santos to comply, said Lewis.

With Santos apprehended, a search revealed that the suspect was allegedly in possession of methamphetamine. Police also found the suspect to have an outstanding $100,000 arrest warrant for carjacking out of Merced.

The suspect was provided medical attention by American Medical Response before being booked.

Santos was arrested and booked for residential burglary, possession of methamphetamine, violation of domestic violence restraining order, resisting arrest, battery of a police officer, and the carjacking warrant.
