Carnegie Arts Center Exhibition Reception for “Works by CSUS Faculty and Works They Collect”

In Praise of Collecting: Works by CSUS Faculty and Works They Collect is about art, achievement, community, and art collecting. A collaborative exhibition between the Carnegie Arts Center and the CSU Stanislaus College of the Arts, it features works by eleven faculty members together with 2-4 art works from their personal collections– some works purchased, some exchanged, some gifts, others found. The artists include Gordon Senior, Dean De Cocker, David Olivant, Jessica Gomula, Ellen Roehne, Richard Savini, James Deitz, Martin Camarata, Hope Werness, John Barnett, and Daryl Joseph Moore. It will be on view through September 16, 2012.

An exhibition reception will be held on Tuesday, July 17th from 5pm to 7pm.

In Praise of Collecting is a new exhibition series at the Carnegie Arts Center and this is the first show in this series that celebrates collecting art. You don’t have to be wealthy to collect art. Whether it takes the form of posters, postcards, art by friends and students, photographs from newspapers, art by professional artists, or art by internationally recognized artists, what matters is that the art work moves you and enhances your life.

A catalog accompanies the exhibit and features art works by the faculty artists and an essay by David Olivant. It serves as a permanent record of the art works while the installation is uniquely able to spark a dialogue that considers correspondences between an artist’s works and those he or she collects. Stopping to ask “Why did the artist collect this work?” or “Are there common themes or styles?” nearly always leads to new insights and observations while enriching the experience of the exhibit.

The collected works are largely placed around the perimeter of the gallery while the works by the faculty artists are arranged in the interior. Viewers can choose to guess which collected works are associated with which artist, or they can use a numbering system on the labels that identifies each work with the artist who collected it.

Sculptures by John Barnett, Gordon Senior and Dean DeCocker are included in the show along with works on paper by James Deitz; mixed media by Hope Werness, Ellen Roehne and David Olivant; digital prints by Martin Camarata, Daryl Joseph Moore, Jessica Gomula, and Richard Savini; and video art by Jessica Gomula.

“This is a show with a great deal of depth in terms of artistic achievement and the wide variety of artistic genres represented. There is also an added dimension of intimacy provided by the collected works,” says Rebecca Phillips Abbott, Executive Director and Curator. Regarding the faculty, Abbott continues, “All are accomplished artists and educators who ask us to reflect upon as well as respond to their works for a most engaging show.”
