The California State University (CSU) Stanislaus College of the Arts Department of Theatre is pleased to present a special performance of Justin Tanner’s comedy Voice Lessons.
This production reunites the cast that originated the play in Los Angeles—three-time Emmy Award winner Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne), French Stewart (3rd Rock from the Sun), and Maile Flanagan. The story of an aspiring singer, her vocal coach, and his girlfriend, Voice Lessons takes the audience on a journey through frustration, romance and absolute hilarity. Reviews of the play rave about the chemistry of the cast and the brilliance of the playwright.
“Playwright Justin Tanner infuses his quirky insight and jaundiced sense of humor within the hilarious machinations of self-deluded community theatre actress Ginny (Laurie Metcalf) and her catatonically despairing vocal coach Nate (French Stewart). Complicating proceedings is the intrusion of Ginny’s theatre rival, Sheryl, played to the self-righteous hilt by Maile Flanagan…[The play] is unhinged.” – Variety
“Laurie Metcalf gives a performance that must be seen to be believed. I sat through it and I am still not sure what passed before me…Metcalf and Stewart know how to work every moment of this show!” – Los Angeles Times
“As funny as any play has a right to be…wonderfully perverse performances.” – The Hollywood Reporter
“Go!” – LA Weekly
4 stars and Critic’s Choice – Los Angeles Times
Critic’s Pick – Backstage West
