Motion, Science to Highlight Carnegie Family Friday

The Carnegie Arts Center will take a turn toward the scientific this Friday.

An evening of learning about motion awaits families at this month's Carnegie Arts Center Family Friday Night.

The free and public event for the whole family will partner the Carnegie Arts Center with teachers from the Great Valley Museum for a fun evening where the whole family can learn about gravity, friction, inertia and momentum. The program will also teach attendees about how machines and bodies work with motion.

“The theme this month is science,” said Lisa McDermott, Assistant Director of the Carnegie Arts Center. “We’re trying to mix it up by providing different activities for families to come together and enjoy – grandparents, parents, and kids.”

The upcoming Family Friday Night will see attendees create a machine with dance movements, while participants draw their own designs for futuristic machines.

“Part of our mission is about challenging people and getting them to stretch their imagination,” said McDermott.

The Carnegie Arts Center holds a Family Friday Night each month. Previous events have included campfire songs and stories, a ukulele night, and a Jackson Pollock night where families learned about the famous painter and were given the opportunity to do their own splatter painting.

While the Family Friday events are geared primarily towards elementary age students, anyone can enjoy them, McDermott said.

“Parents always get involved,” McDermott said, noting that many parents at the Pollock event really enjoyed making their own splatter painting. “Our events are fun and creative, and people can participate as a family.”

The Programming Committee Board members at the Carnegie Arts Center work alongside with community members to develop each month's theme and activity. Though most events for the remainder of the year have yet to be planned, on March 15 the Family Friday Night will feature an Irish Dance Steps session in concurrence with St. Patrick’s Day.

Family Friday events are held at 7pm, are open to the public at no charge, and are sponsored by Off Center Thrift & Gift.
