Officers Subdue Subject Causing Self-Harm Outside City Hall

Turlock police officers had to use force to restrain a male subject who was causing self-harm outside of City Hall on Tuesday morning.

The subject was provided medical attention and ultimately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, reports the Turlock Police Department.

Officers responded to City Hall at approximately 8:49 a.m. after receiving multiple calls of a male subject who had set up a camp directly outside the front entrance.

According to Turlock police, the subject was lighting paper on fire and cutting himself with a razor blade.

When officers arrived, they found the subject “agitated and actively cutting himself,” according to authorities.

Officers made multiple verbal attempts to get the man to discard the razor so authorities could provide him assistance, however, they were unsuccessful.

The subject continued causing himself harm, so officers pepper sprayed him, but that did not affect his behavior, reports Turlock police. Officers were forced to use a “less-than-lethal impact device” in an attempt to subdue the subject which disabled the subject enough to allow officers to approach and make direct contact.

While making contact, the subject continued to resist. Officers then deployed a Taser, which had no effect due to the thick jacket the subject was wearing.

Officers were eventually able to restrain the subject and he was provided medical attention. He was subsequently transported to an area hospital for treatment of his self-inflicted wounds.

The name of the subject is not being released at this time.
