California State University, Stanislaus kicked off the Spring 2015 semester today.
The University opened with a total headcount of 8,541 students, a 4.5 percent increase from Spring 2014, according to CSU Stanislaus Director of Communications and Creative Services Janice Curtin.
CSU Stanislaus still remains one of the most affordable universities in the state, with tuition and fees for a full-time undergraduate student totaling $3,341 per semester plus $180 parking permit fee. Fees have not increased from last semester.
Of the 8,541 students enrolled for the Spring 2015 semester, 7,162 are full-time equivalent students, “which is calculated using a 15 credit hour load for undergraduate students, and 12 credit hour load for graduate students—a commonly used measure in higher education,” said Curtin.
While fees have remained flat, parking may continue to be a controversy for both students and residents in surrounding neighborhoods.
A common misconception amongst students is that parking is not enforced the first week of classes, however parking is being enforced by the University Police Department from the first day of classes and the $180 parking permit or day-pass is required to park on campus.
“Parking will be enforced starting the first day of the semester,” said CSU Stanislaus Associate Vice President Communications and Public Affairs Tim Lynch. “Those with a Winter Intersession pass are good through Jan. 29, and spring semester passes are valid Jan. 20 through June 10.”
Due to many of the parking issues experienced by both students and the surrounding community, Lynch says a task force is expected to submit recommendations for parking this semester.
“A task force consisting of a cross-section of the university community, as well as representatives from the City of Turlock, which includes Transit Services, has been studying parking issues and is expected to submit its recommendations for review this semester,” said Lynch. “Any changes that are adopted would be implemented in the 2016-17 academic year.”
The Spring 2015 will run through May 15, which is the last day of classes before final exams taking place May 18 through 22.
CSU Stanislaus commencement will take place on May 28 and 29 this year.
