Despite a record setting drought through Jan., Turlock has been hit with heavy rain since Thursday. With more rain expected throughout the weekend and Monday, it’s important to stay safe on newly slick roads.

It starts with the windshield wipers. Always make sure you replace old or brittle wiper blades, but do not forget to turn those headlights on every time your wipers are on, it’s California law. This also means making sure those headlights work.

Next, what some consider the most important maintenance for the rainy season, tires. This of course means replacing tires with worn thread, but it also means keeping tire pressure at the suggested level, said Turlock Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Service Advisor David Lemus.

Third, brakes. The brakes on your vehicle will get wet and slick in the rain, therefore a good set of brakes may help prevent that accident.

As for safety once your vehicle has been through maintenance, the California Office of Traffic Safety offers some tips:
-Stay toward the middle lanes as water tends to pool in outside lanes.
-Never drive through moving water if you can’t see through it – you could be swept up in the water.
-Avoid driving through deep water – it can damage the vehicle’s electronics.
-When stopping or slowing, do not brake hard. Keep mild pressure on the brake pedal.
-Never use cruise control on wet roads.
-If you find yourself hydroplaning or skidding, do not brake or turn suddenly. Ease your foot off the gas pedal until you can feel the traction of the road again. Turn your steering wheel in the direction of the skid and as you recover, gently straighten the wheel. If you need to brake, gently pump the brake pedal.
