Historian, lawyer, and professor Sarah Fields will visit California State University, Stanislaus on Feb. 23 to discuss the significant issues surrounding equality in athletics.

“Title IX from Equal Opportunity to Criminality” is sponsored by the University’s College of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, along with the History Department, and is free and open to the public.

The presentation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Faculty Development Center on the east end of campus. Free parking will be available in Lot 8.

Fields wrote the first book to examine the legal and social battles over the right of women to join men on the playing field.

“Sarah Fields is a pioneer in the study of Title IX and its application to participation in athletics,” said Professor Katherine Royer, CSU Stanislaus History Department Chair. “Her presentation should be of interest to educators, athletic directors, parents and anyone else interested in the changing landscape of sports in America.”

Fields is an associate professor Communication Department at the University of Colorado, Denver. She earned her BA from Yale and a JD from Washington University in St. Louis.

Her research broadly examines the intersection of sports and American culture — but more specifically she explores gender equity laws, including Title IX and the 14th Amendment.
