Turlock Area Teachers Encouraged to Apply or Be Nominated for Presidential Award for Excellence

Turlock’s Congressman, Representative Jeff Denham, announced the beginning of the nomination and application process for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

The PAEMST program was established by Congress in 1983, and is the nation’s highest honor for teachers of mathematics and science. Each year, awards are given to one teacher from each state or U.S. Jurisdiction, with the nomination process alternating between elementary and secondary instructors. The 2012 award program will recognize kindergarten through sixth grade teachers.

“Now, more than ever, it is critical for our children to excel in math and science in order to remain competitive in an increasingly globalized world,” Congressman Denham said. “The PAEMST program is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the teachers making a difference in the lives of our children every day and who instill in them the skills they need to create a bright and secure future for our country.”

Winners of the award will receive a certificate from the President, as well as a trip to Washington, D.C. There, the teachers will have the opportunity to meet with their U.S. Senators and Representatives and will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

Nominations can be made through April 1, 2012, and teachers will have until May 1, 2012, to complete their applications. To submit nominations, applications, or to find out more about the program, please visit the PAEMST website at www.paemst.org. Any member of the general public can submit a nomination, and all eligible teachers are encouraged to apply.
