Turlock Teachers Association Takes Salary Cuts to Save Jobs

The vote came in on Thursday night; About 730 teachers will take a half percent salary cut and pay $33 more per month for health benefits in a deal to save the 118 teachers that received pink slips this month.

The proposed deal that is expected to be accepted and approved by the Turlock Unified School District will also include one work furlough day when students are not in school and increasing the average class size by one student to make the average 21 per class.

The agreement will likely be passed at the next TUSD Board Meeting and will go into effect beginning on July 1, 2009.

The budget impact from the TTA’s compromises will save the school district $1.6 million during the 2009-10 fiscal year.

The 2009-10 budget projects a $6.5 million deficit. With the teacher’s deal, the school district will still have to look to cut $4.9 million from the $120 million budget.

TUSD used $4 million from reserves to cover most of this year’s deficit.
