Allison “Ally” Mello, 23, a Pitman High School graduate, is off and racing on year's running of CBS's award-winning program “The Amazing Race.”
Mello and her partner, Ashley Covert, 25, are both members of the Ice Crew for the National Hockey League's Los Angeles Kings. The duo finished sixth of 11 teams on the first leg, which took racers to Iquique, Chile.
The race began on a Southern California soundstage, in the midst of a Wild West-style shootout. Following a driving race to the Los Angeles International Airport, Mello and Covert made it on the fastest flight to Chile.
The two were in third at the start of the race's first roadblock – a task that only one team member must perform – paragliding off of a rocky cliff. Thanks to some confusing wording in the clue, Mello ended up doing the paragliding.
“I can't believe I'm going off that,” Mello said. “… Holy moly.”
Covert was tasked with following Mello to a nearby beach. However, due to a slow cab, Mello and Covert completed the roadblock in seventh.
The teams then encountered a second roadblock, where Mello had to row a small boat to collect five fish from a nearby fishing boat. Mello had difficulties maneuvering the boat, but managed to leave the roadblock in sixth after another team misread their clue.
“I got my fishies!” Mello shouted as she finished the task. “Ew, there are guts coming out of it! This is so gross.”
The leg ended at the Teatro Municipal de Iquique. Of the seven teams on the first flight, Mello and Covert finished sixth.
The Amazing Race will next air at 7 p.m. Sunday on CBS.
