Unveiling the Mystery Behind the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds Arch Gate Time Capsule

A piece of Stanislaus County Fair history is hoping to make an appearance this month when a rumored time capsule will potentially be unearthed at the fairgrounds’ historic arch gate.

Past and present members of the local community are invited to attend the Stanislaus County Fair’s time capsule unveiling event Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 10 a.m. The event will take place at the fairgrounds’ historic arch gate on North Broadway Avenue, between Canal and Front Street in Turlock.

“It is important for us to celebrate the history that has shaped our community, which is essential for us to be part of this time capsule to see what, if anything is hidden in our arch gate,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “This is a great way to kick-off our Fair’s centennial celebration.”

Local lore says there may be something hidden in the pillars of Stanislaus County fairgrounds’ historic arch gate, placed by the construction workers and Legion members – however, many community members think otherwise. The capsule is believed to have been buried 82 years ago on April 16, 1929 during the dedication of the just-built arch gate. While researching the history of the century-old fair, a publication from the Turlock Historical Society, the Turlock Pioneer, from 1999 was found, mentioning a time capsule placed behind one of the steel Legion and Auxiliary shields that adorn the pillars, though no one seems to know for sure which one.

Come to the Fairgrounds April 16 to find the truth behind the mystery!
