A proposed community bocce ball court is back on the Turlock Parks, Recreation & Community Programs Commission agenda this Wednesday.
The two Rotary Club-funded bocce ball courts were originally proposed for Crane Park but neighbors vetoed the placement in July 2012, arguing the park is already overused.
Rotary Club representatives have since suggested three alternate locations for the courts: Dale Pinkney Park, Bristol Park, and Curt Andre Park.
Dale Pinkney Park, located on Moonbeam Way near the corner of Taylor Road and Berkeley Avenue, is viewed as the best option by city staff. The park has ample open space, and is in a new area of town.
Bristol Park, located just off Tuolumne Road between Daubenberger Road and Quincy Road, was also viewed as a “reasonable” option.
Mike Dini from the noon Turlock Rotary Club will be present to discuss the proposed locations on Wednesday.
According to Dini, the Rotary Club has plans to place lawn signs at each proposed site in search of public comment prior to any decision. The signs would direct visitors to the project's Facebook page.
A public hearing will be held before a final location is selected.
On Wednesday, the Parks, Recreation & Community Programs Commission is expected to:
• Hear an update on possible locations for a donated statue of Queen Shamiram, the first female ruler of the Neo Assyrian Empire. The 9-foot tall bronze was donated by chef, radio, and television personality Narsai David, formerly of Turlock.
Local Assyrian leaders had hoped to site the statue at California State University Stanislaus, but the University has stated they have “no interest” in displaying the statue. Other potential sites include the Carnegie Arts Center, the Turlock Library, or a patch of vacant city-owned land near an educational facility.
• Discuss new policies planned for Crane Park, which will be instituted this year to address concerns heard from the neighborhood. No information was made available about the proposed policies in advance of Wednesday's meeting.
The Parks, Recreation & Community Programs Commission will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Yosemite Room of Turlock City Hall, 156 S. Broadway.
